I have paid SEK 10,000 as a Christmas gift to Wikimedia Sweden on behalf of my clients.
I work mostly with clients in the public sector, which means you can barely buy someone a simple lunch without ending up in legal trouble, and the same of course applies to Christmas gifts. To show my appreciation, I have chosen to give a generous Christmas gift to an organisation working on issues close to my heart. There are still almost two months to go until Christmas, so it may be early to give this year’s Christmas present already, but this year’s recipient is in a somewhat special situation.
Wikimedia, which runs the Swedish operations for Wikipedia, has lost a legal battle over freedom of panorama, the right to share images of public art, and some larger projects have not come in at the pace they expected. This means they have run into financial difficulties and have had to scale back their ambitions. They are best placed to explain their situation themselves, so read more and do donate a little yourself (they accept Swish).
An early Merry Christmas to you all!
